Why this petition matters

Started by Karen Freyer

We need your help to protect our neighbourhood.

The State Government want to overdevelop Waterloo to levels never before seen in Sydney.

About 7,500 homes for more than 14,000 residents are planned for towers up to 40 storeys high on the Waterloo public housing estate and the "Metro Quarter" around the suburb's future rail station.

This would make the area roughly double the density of Sydney's most built-up suburbs, Rhodes and Zetland.

To make matters worse, Waterloo is adjacent to Zetland and The Australian Technology Park that will house 20,000 extra workers in the area.

Despite wanting to increase the number of homes on the site by 388 per cent, the NSW Government will add only 28 new social housing units.

If the Government's scheme goes ahead, the character of our neighbourhood will be eroded.

We'll see increased building heights from 30 to 40 storeys, 10,000 more residents, increased traffic and our neighbours in social housing will be kicked out.

We need a planning system for our neighbourhood that puts people and communities back at the heart of the planning system.

We request that The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP, Premier of New South Wales, and The Hon. A. J. Roberts MP, Minster for Planning, Minister for Housing, Special Minister of State, immediately commit to returning planning for the Waterloo redevelopment to the City of Sydney Council and give it back to our community.
