Artwork concept for Welcome to Redfern by Reko Rennie, Redfern Terrace Street Art Project based on the engraving Pimbloy: Native of New Holland in a canoe of that country, 1804 by Samuel John Neele (1758-1824) from 'The Narrative of a Voyage of Discovery Performed in H. M. Vessel Lady Nelson, 1803-1804' by James Grant. Collection of the State Library New South Wales. An example of this can be seed on the City Art page http://www.cityartsydney.com.au/cityart/projects/redfernterrace.asp(image courtesy of the City of Sydney)

Reko Rennie's new mural in the Aboriginal colours covers a Victorian terrace house in Caroline Street in Redfern and will eventually house a living museum of The Block. Welcome to Redfern is a bold statement on a highly visible corner of Redfern, developed by Rennie with eight young Aboriginal artists.

Hetti Perkins, the curator of the City of Sydney's Eora Journey project of which this is the first commission, describes it as a work that represents the present, imagines the future and honours the past.
