McGovern and seven indigenous writers familiarised themselves with Redfern on a walking tour before getting to their first day of a week of tutorials, which he will follow up in a month. Family Culture Day on the Block & Tribal Warrior |  | Shane Phillips has a long history of working to empower disadvantaged Indigenous Australians through his involvement as CEO of the Tribal Warrior Association and organiser of the renowned Family Culture Day on the Block at Redfern. The Tribal Warrior Association aims to spread and revitalise Aboriginal culture, and to provide economic and social stability to Aboriginal people. Similarly, Family Culture Day on the Block is a celebration of Indigenous culture and showcases the talent within the Redfern Indigenous community – all with the aim of bringing about change. Shane sees Family Day as a way to reclaim the community from substance abuse. The day also demonstrates to wider Australia and the community itself that change on The Block is possible. Shane is a cultural leader who believes the pathway to positive change is through empowerment and belief in the pride and strength of Indigenous people.

Local group, Yurungai Dance, has been honoured for outstanding performance
at the 11th World Children’s Theatre Festival in Lingen, Germany. Yurungai Dance comprises children from Mount Carmel and Alexandria Park Community schools and involved in the Factory Community Centre and the Yurungai Learning Centre. The group, which rehearses at the PACT Theatre in Erskineville, interprets and reconfigures traditional dance. [SSH]

Sadly the Gathering Ground 2010 Timelessness show was cancelled on Thursday & Saturday nights due to bad weather. However, we had one of the best shows ever on Friday night as the clounds parted and the moon shone in all her glory. Kids danced, hung from the pavilion aerial, and puppets came to life. The community performed, sang, told stories and fireworks went off. All in all a WOW of a show. Thank you to all those who came to witness this one off event. LMS

| Mary Munro’s journey to uncover the truth about the suspicious circumstances under which her great uncle Milton died in a remote South Australian mining town in 1960 enabled her family, particularly her grandmother, to finally experience peace. “The story of his death has been passed through the generations of my family. All we knew was quite vague – that he fell in love with a white woman, was shot by her father and buried in a mine,” Munro says. The reality was a lot more complex. ‘Without Lisa I would have given up, as it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions. I’ve been through disgust, anger, frustration but I’ve gotten to the point where everything is right. My grandmother’s brother no longer rests in an unmarked grave but beside his father and grandfather.’... 'When this is completed, I have a contemporary drama. I want to celebrate Aboriginal lifestyle and culture and show people that we have always been the same as them, with crucial hopes, dreams, desires and pains.’ SSH Feb 2010

An assembly of around 30 supporters both local and visitors gathered at the Redfern Community Centre last Saturday to protest against Black Deaths in Custody. A relatively low attendance considering the event was publicised widely by both email and flyers, and an oddly vacant feeling considering what has occurred upon this very same land of protest in the past. Never the less, the numbers gathered comprised of volunteers of the Social Aliance Group, members of the Gamarada Healing Program and locally based reporters and photographers. The ever dedicated Social Justice advocate Ray Jackson spearheaded the protest co-organised by fellow Human Rights Advocate Raul Bassi. Typically informative, Ray reflected upon several of the most serious accounts of deaths of individuals whereby Corrective Services and or Police have been involved. The most local of course being that of T.J. Hickey. Jackson painfully enlightened the gatherers with graphic information relating to the most recent victims, both male and female. Local community activist and representative of the Hickey family Bowie Hickey reminded the assembly of the harsh reality of incessant Police victimisation and harassment and made a tearful and emotional plea for this tragic fact to cease. Bowie's on self styled dissent artistically emblazoned on the rear of her top. Conveniently, their very presence was made felt by the occasional 'routine drive-by'. Ray Jackson continued to reminded the supporters of the seemingly impartial attitudes of Governance since the Hawke/ labour years on addressing Indigenous deaths in custody sufficiently. These harrowing statistics have arrived at a ghastly total in excess of 400 Indigenous individuals whom have been dealt the wrath of the 'Justice System' to date. HISTORY OF THE ABORIGINAL STRUGGLE FOR JUSTICE
A one day seminar/workshop on the little known history of the Aboriginal struggle for justice 1908 - 1988.
Conducted by Gary Foley the workshop will consist of two one hour lectures, plus screening of two rare, unseen films and a question and answer session.
A unique opportunity to learn more about the unknown history of the Koori resistance. In order to understand the situation today, one must have a basic awareness of the politics and history of the long term struggle.
