THE 2008 NSW INDIGENOUS HISTORY FELLOWSHIP ($20,000)

The NSW Indigenous History Fellowship was offered biennially by the Government to assist a person living in New South Wales to research and produce a work on a subject of historical interest relating to New South Wales from an Indigenous point of view.

2008 NSW INDIGENOUS HISTORY FELLOWSHIP WINNER: SUZANNE INGRAM

Suzanne Ingram has been awarded the $20,000 2008 NSW Indigenous History Fellowship to enable her to research and write the biography of Mrs Louisa Ingram OAM. Ms Ingram’s research proposal is an important and timely contribution to both the history of Indigenous activism in New South Wales and the expanding field of Indigenous family history. The life of Louisa Ingram spans important decades in the history of Indigenous struggle, including such key events as the 1938 Day of Mourning and Aboriginal activism of more recent decades in Redfern, and is intimately connected with the broader involvement of the well-known Ingram family in Aboriginal activism all over the state.

The proposed research promises not only to emphasise the strong links between the personal and the political but also to focus on the links between country and city, in this case Redfern and Cowra where Louisa Ingram was born and grew up on the local Erambie Mission. It will also make a contribution to the important history of the state’s Aboriginal missions.

Ms Ingram has already done a considerable amount of preparatory work on the project, has a clear research plan and itinerary, and the support of the communities and families concerned. The NSW Indigenous History Fellowship can play a key part in making possible the work of emerging Indigenous researchers which, without such support, might never come to fruition. Ms Ingram’s proposed project is a good example of such a vital contribution to the Aboriginal history of NSW, written from an Indigenous perspective, which the Fellowship is designed to support.

In 2006 Heidi Norman was awarded the Indigenous History Fellowship to enable her to research the impact of economic change on Aboriginal people in the Redfern and Waterloo communities.

The project, which will assist elders to record their knowledge of the development of their communities, including significant social, economic and political changes, will be a critical resource for future historical analysis and family histories. It will also form the basis of a public history of the Redfern and Waterloo districts.
